Global Warming - What's Old is New Again...

Hat tip to Chris for pointing me to this story.

From The Washington Times:

D.C. resident John Lockwood was conducting research at the Library of Congress and came across an intriguing Page 2 headline in the Nov. 2, 1922 edition of The Washington Post: "Arctic Ocean Getting Warm; Seals Vanish and Icebergs Melt."

The 1922 article, obtained by Inside the Beltway, goes on to mention "great masses of ice have now been replaced by moraines of earth and stones," and "at many points well-known glaciers have entirely disappeared."

"This was one of several such articles I have found at the Library of Congress for the 1920s and 1930s," says Mr. Lockwood. "I had read of the just-released NASA estimates, that four of the 10 hottest years in the U.S. were actually in the 1930s, with 1934 the hottest of all."
That's it. That's the whole article. To me, it's worth pondering. Hmmmm... Could it even be possible that these atmospheric changes are cyclical? I know, I know...you've heard me bring that up before.

Global Warming - Blame the Moose!!

I guess since it's late Tuesday, you can kind of consider this "Two for Tuesday" as far as posts go!

This was too good to pass up! It came from Spiegel online. Some of the direct quotes are just too funny:

"The poor old Scandinavian moose is now being blamed for climate change, with researchers in Norway claiming that a grown moose can produce 2,100 kilos of methane a year -- equivalent to the CO2 output resulting from a 13,000 kilometer car journey."
Beano?
"Norway is concerned that its national animal, the moose, is harming the climate by emitting an estimated 2,100 kilos of carbon dioxide a year through its belching and farting."
Hmmmm, between college students, cattle and moose...we're sunk! Later in the article:
Norway has some 120,000 moose but an estimated 35,000 are expected to be killed in this year's moose hunting season, which starts on September 25, Norwegian newspaper VG reported.
Doing a little math - using 2.2 pounds per kilo.

2,100 kilos of methane = 4,620 pounds of methane

4,620 pounds of methane X 120,000 moose = 554,400,000 POUNDS of Methane (yuck!)

I guess we should be thankful for the Norwegian moose hunting season which should reduce methane emissions by 161,700,000!

Now that we're thinking along this line...what about Canada?? I did a couple quick searches and found this: 830,000 Canadian moose!! (4,620 X 830,000 = 3,834,600,000 POUNDS of methane!) Wow...that's a LOT of global warming gas from good ole moose farts and burps!

Maybe I could patent "Beano Bait" for wildlife???

Winning on Wednesday - Victory

Here's a question for you and some encouragement. As Christians, no, as people, how can we achieve victory? Victory over what you ask. Victory over ourselves. The "selves" we were born as and cannot overcome.

I know, I know...what am I blabbing about and where did all this come from. This started when I picked up a witness bracelet that we picked up at church. It's from Victory Sports Camps. If I remember correctly, our church is going to be partnering with them on a future mission trip where they will conduct sports camps. So, what does that have to do with this? Well, on the bracelet is a bible verse:

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Corinthians 15:57
What a powerful statement! So, I decided to look up other bible verses on victory:
Give us aid against the enemy,
for the help of man is worthless.

With God we will gain the victory,
and he will trample down our enemies.

Psalm 108:12-13
and
For the LORD gives wisdom,
and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

He holds victory in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,

for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.

Proverbs 2:6-8
and
for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
1 John 5:4
Does anybody else see a theme here? True victory can only be found in a relationship with God. Not in ourselves. Not in friends nor family. Not in careers. Not in material success. When it's all said and done, all of those things will one day pass away. So, back to the original verse:
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Corinthians

Tropical Storm Dean on the Move

Tropical Storm Dean is moving into Antilles now. As I posted earlier, it's about time this Hurricane Season get started. The following is from Accuweather. You can also see a forecast path at that link.

Tropical Storm Dean, which the previous headline states will become a hurricane by late Thursday, will be more than a "fish storm." Dean will likely make a few landfalls over the Caribbean Islands from Friday into early next week. With a large area of high pressure directing Dean to the west then a gradual turn to the west-northwest expected, the Lesser Antilles will be the first to feel Dean's wrath Friday. The inland chain will endure pounding surf, torrential rain and battering winds into Friday night before Dean departs, likely moving over the Dominican Republic and Haiti this weekend. The storm may then head toward the Gulf of Mexico next week. The Southeast, especially South Florida, should not let down its guard.

Well...it's about time

Considering this was supposed to be another hyperactive year, it's about TIME the Atlantic basin began heating up:

Accuweather

"Monday morning, eastern time, Tropical Depression 04L was declared. At the time, TD 04L was more than 500 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. This weather system was showing good potential for strengthening to a tropical storm and, ultimately, a hurricane, while plying its way westward under the influence of the trade winds. Friday, 04L will likely approach the Lesser Antilles, potentially as a hurricane."

California and Flying

I just got back in town from California. As usual, it was all business, but it ended up being a pretty good trip. It was one of the few times I get to go to California and I got to sight see a little bit. Thankfully, we had a full afternoon between activities so a few co-workers and I took the opportunity to go whale watching. That was something I have never done and I don't know when or if I will ever get to do that again. It was AWESOME. The weather was cold and the wind stiff, but seeing humpback whales is truly an experience.

They are truly huge; yet graceful. Watching them made you really appreciate how grand and wonderful creation is. My camera messed up, but thankfully I had coworkers with cameras. Here are a couple pictures of what I witnessed:

But as usual, the trip was not without something weird. When we landed back in Charlotte and pulled up to the gate, I looked out the window and saw this:

What a way for US Airways to help Charlotte impress travelers! Gotta love the fact that our Carolina roots are showing!
